Prof. Dr. Peter Falkai

Chairman, Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, LMU Munich

Main Focus

I have been working in the field of psychiatry for more than 30 years. My main research interest is focused on the neurobiology and treatment of psychotic disorders, namely schizophrenia. This interest was raised in my early career, starting with post-mortem-studies in the field of schizophrenia progressing into the field of structural imaging. Since 2003, I am member of BrainNet and BrainNet Europe II. I am head of the brain bank for psychiatric diseases, founded in 2014.

Currently, I am heading a multidisciplinary team of researchers, allowing the use of techniques ranging from functional imaging to gene expression in human post-mortem-tissue. My team is part of a research network of the Department of Psychiatry in Munich where risk factors for psychotic disorders for the long-term course are identified (T. Schulze) and their functions are described in transgenic mouse models (M. Rossner). This leads to the identification of drug target testing (repurposed compounds) in clinical studies (A. Hasan). In a series of clinical studies, I was the principle investigator in the study of aerobic exercise as add-on treatment in schizophrenia.
